Factors Influencing Cultural Competency of Nurse Officers

Abstract

|
Purpose : The aims of this study are to investigates the levels of Cultural Competency of Korean Army nurse officers and to identify the factors influencing on Cultural Competency.
Methods : A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was used. Data were collected from 238 nurse officers in seven Korean military hospitals in December, 2016. Cultural Competence Scale, Compassionate Competence Scale and Professional Self-Concept of Nurses Instrument were used.
Results : The Cultural Competency of Korean Army nurse officers was significantly different due to factors such as foreign language fluency(p=.015), experience of living abroad for more than a month(p<.001), caring experience of foreign patients(p=.001), presence of foreign friends(p<.001). There were significant correlations between cultural competency, compassionate competence and professional self-concept(p<.001). In the multiple linear regression analysis, the significant factors influencing cultural competency of nurse officers were compassionate competence (p<.001), presence of foreign friends(p<.001), professional self-concept(p=.002) and experience of living abroad(p=<.033). These factors explained 32.8%(p=.001) of this model.
Conclusion : In order to improve cultural competency of nurse officers, It is necessary to develop the multicultural education program includes compassionate competence and professional self-concept.
